| Research and Professional Experience Narrative |
| |
Dr. Paulsen's research has concentrated
in the area of grain quality as affected by drying, handling,
and storage for corn and soybeans over the past 21 years.
Recent interest areas are measurements for Near infrared transmittance
(NIT) testing for starch, oil and protein, and use of computer
vision for measurement of physical properties and visual factors
relating to grain quality. Other research areas of interest
have been breakage of corn during handling, corn hardness
testing, moisture measurements in corn, and heat damage detection
for wet milling. He has spent the Fall 1996 semester on sabbatical
leave visiting with grain dryer and handling equipment manufacturers
and grain drying installations and developing materials for
teaching instruction. He teaches TSM 281 on Grain drying,
storage and handling systems; AG E 387 on Grain drying and
conditioning; and TSM 381 Electrical and microcomputer controls
for agriculture. |

He is the recipient of several awards in
research, including the ASAE Outstanding Paper Award for Transactions
of ASAE publication and the Quality of Communication Award
by the American Agricultural Economics Association for the
publication "Corn Quality: Changes during export".
Dr. Paulsen is the current Treasurer of the Illinois Chapter
of Phi Kappa Phi, and is a member of Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma
Delta, Alpha Epsilon. He is listed in Who's Who in the Midwest,
American Men and Women of Science, and International Who's
Who in Engineering. |

He is the Past-Chair of the
Food and Process Engineering Institute (FPEI) and has served
for 4 years as Associate Editor for Cereal Chemistry. He has
reviewed over 150 manuscripts and proposals for professional
societies and USDA NRICGP and Small Business Research Initiatives.
Dr. Paulsen was an instructor for the American Association
of Cereal Chemist's workshop on corn milling held in May 1995
and 1996. He has served as a consultant for the U.S. Feed
Grains Council for assessing enhanced-value corn for Japan
markets and in May 1996 was an invited speaker for a USFGC
sponsored conference in Bogota, Columbia on "Grain Storage
and Handling". |
